Summer is a perfect time for movies, and movies are a great way to spend quality time with your children. But with all of the movies coming out for the season, how do you know which ones are right for your child?
Well to begin, you can use common sense to help you figure it out: Common Sense Media, that is. From the company’s website:
Common Sense Media helps families make smart media choices. We offer the largest, most trusted library of independent age-based and educational ratings and reviews for movies, games, apps, TV shows, websites, books, and music. Our Parent Concerns and Parent Blog help families understand and navigate the problems and possibilities of raising children in the digital age.
On the Common Sense Media site, you can find the Kids' Summer Movie Guide 2017, which provides a target age, short summary, parent reviews, and “What parents need to know” for flicks released each month. Here’s an example of the “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2” “What parent’s need to know” (Warning: spoiler alert).
Movie theaters take advantage of the summer season, which means you can too. Many theaters across the state offer showings and discounts especially for families. You should be able to find one close to home:
- BowTie Cinemas Summer Kids Series (Hartford, Stamford, Trumbull)
- Cinemark Summer Movie Clubhouse (Enfield, Manchester, Milford, North Haven)
- Regal Summer Movie Express (Branford)
Maybe you would enjoy a movie under the stars instead, perhaps by piling the entire family into a car:
- Mansfield Drive-in Theatre and Marketplace (Mansfield Center)
- Pleasant Valley Drive-in (Barkhamsted)
- Southington Drive-In (Southington)
Or by enjoying a picnic:
- Free Movies in the Park (Hartford)
- Friday Flicks in the Parks (New Haven)
- Movies, Music, and More (Canton)
Of course, some nights you just want to stay in and watch some Netflix. Common Sense Media’s Best Kids' Movies on Netflix in 2017 breaks down what’s available by the following age groups:
