In 2009, Pope Benedict XVI published his last encyclical titled Caritas in Veritate (Charity in Truth). It discussed the challenges of global development and the ‘common good’. His premise is that essential to the establishment of the ‘common good’  for all people are two elements – Love and Truth. Even in this beautiful month of February where thoughts of love and romance abound, we still cannot ignore the drumbeat of truth: social, political and religious turmoil.

Different organizations, along with broadcast, electronic or print media compete with one another to present specific slants, biases, or opinions in order to engage our allegiance. Perhaps Pope Benedict’s encyclical can come to our aid in this chaos, and we can be better guided by its message and basic directive. The solution to today’s challenges probably cannot be found in debate, “but rather on moral principles to inform the building of such solutions,” writes Pope Benedict. Take a look at Caritas in Veritate.  There are several chapters that you may find interesting that address the rugged landscape of current issues – and present a clear direction for all – Love in Truth.
