Every year, since 2011, Dr. Dale R. Hoyt, Superintendent of Catholic Schools in the Archdiocese of Hartford, has personally celebrated the students who have gone above and beyond in their commitment to academic excellence. The Superintendent’s Summa Scholar Award, embodied in an engraved medallion, recognizes high school seniors who will be graduating in the top 5% of their class based on their cumulative grade point average and their outstanding academic achievement from freshman year to the close of the first semester of the senior year. These students, identified by each school’s chief administrator, are invited to attend the Summa Scholar Award Ceremony.
A Toast to Teacher Dedication
It would be difficult to talk about academic success without talking about our academic community. Every member of our faculty has been chosen for their superior qualifications and dedication to fostering a culture of spiritual and intellectual growth. So we feel that in honoring our students, we must also commend the people who helped get them to where they are now. Therefore, every student who is nominated for a Summa Award will nominate a teacher from a school in the Archdiocese of Hartford, either elementary or secondary, who has made a significant impact on him or her, both academically and personally. Those teachers, in turn, are invited to the Summa Scholar Award Ceremony and presented with a certificate of appreciation and public acknowledgement from the student who submitted the nomination.
Applause for Family Faith in Education
It is also important to acknowledge that education begins at home, and during the ceremony, Dr. Hoyt always has a special thank you for parents and guardians. A celebratory reception follows the ceremony during which students, teachers, and families can relax and applaud all of the hard work that has made them a part of this very special occasion. We are very proud of each and every person involved in this exceptional honor.
With our combined resources, support, and encouragement, every student who enrolls in a school in the Archdiocese of Hartford can become a celebrated Summa Scholar!
